Dhaka Correspondent:
A manhole cover theft occurred in the capital early in the morning using a CNG autorickshaw. A video of the incident went viral on social media, creating widespread discussion.
In the video, a man wearing a blue shirt can be seen getting out of the CNG and desperately trying to lift the manhole cover. After eighteen attempts, he broke the lock and took the cover.
Google Maps analysis revealed that the incident took place in front of a shop named Alpha Broadway System in the Mahmud Nagar residential area of Demra in the capital. The video sharers said that the incident took place at around 3:30 am yesterday next to the signboard Mahmudia Mahila Madrasa.
Incidents of manhole cover theft in different areas of the capital are not new. From alleys to main roads, the risk of accidents is increasing everywhere due to this theft. Pedestrians and vehicles are facing serious danger.
Locals allege that such crimes have increased at night due to the non-functioning street lights in Wards 55, 56 and 57 of Dhaka South City Corporation. According to them, most of the places do not have manhole covers, but if they had been installed more firmly, such a situation would not have arisen.
Locals demand that the administration and the city corporation should come forward to stop the theft of manhole covers by taking quick and effective steps.
