In Khetlal Upazila of Joypurhat, a drug-addicted son has been accused of secretly digging a huge hole (grave) inside his house with the intention of killing his disabled and helpless father by burying him alive. In this incident, the local people caught the young man named Mostakim (25) red-handed and beat him up.
Last Wednesday (July 8), a shocking incident took place in Baniachapar village of the upazila. The incident has created widespread excitement and anger in the area.
According to local and victim family sources, farmer Abdus Salam (48) of Baniachapar village fell from a tree five years ago and became paralyzed. He has been bedridden for a long time as both legs are paralyzed from the waist down. Although the eldest daughter Suraiya Akhter passed her MA, she sold fuchkas with her mother and other siblings in the neighboring town of Dupchanchia in Bogra to support the family. And Pangu Salam lived under the supervision of his eldest son Mostakim in the open veranda of his tin shed mud house.
It is alleged that although Mostakim initially served his father, he gradually became addicted to drugs and started attacking his father. Pangu often beat his father for drug money and threatened to kill him. For the past few days, Salam’s father became scared after seeing Mostakim’s suspicious behavior. Mostakim was doing something alone in the house with a bucket in his hand. Last Wednesday afternoon, Salam called his cousin Raju and requested him to look inside the house. Raju opened the door of the house and saw a huge hole about 5 feet wide and 7 feet deep in one corner of the house. At the same time, he saw bags filled with soil all over the house and piles of mud and soil prepared on the floor of another room.
When the incident came to light, the local villagers arrested Mostakim and tied him up with rope. Later, claiming that Mostakim was a drug addict and promising to file a written complaint with the police station, his mother and elder sister rescued him from the locals and quickly left the village.
Village resident Raju Ahmed said that Mostakim dug this hole to secretly bury his disabled father alive and prepared mud to cover him with soil. His intention was to remove his father, who had become a burden to the family and society, from the world.
The victim Abdus Salam said in a tearful voice, that my son secretly dug a hole inside the house to kill me by covering him with soil. People from outside used to come to me every day. He would abuse me even when I was drinking salt. He would come and beat me with whatever he had in his hand. He would occasionally threaten to kill me. If the matter had not been made public, maybe no one would have found me. I am very afraid for my son. I cry to God for death, but death does not happen. I do not want to live anymore. I have raised four children with great difficulty in my life. Thinking about the future of my children, I sold my wealth and did not get them treated. Now my wife also mistreats me. I really have no one in this world.
At that time, he demanded that the administration ensure his safety as long as he is alive.
However, Mostakim’s elder sister Suraiya Begum claimed that my brother is addicted to drugs, it is true. However, the matter of digging a hole to kill his father is not right. There may be some other reason behind this. We will complain to the police station. Let the police investigate and find out the truth.
In this regard, Inspector (Investigation) of Khetlal Police Station Md. Abdul Karim said, we have heard the matter verbally. However, no written complaint has been received at the police station so far. If a complaint is received, legal action will be taken immediately after investigation.
