The last giraffe in Gazipur Safari Park has also died.

The last giraffe open to visitors at Gazipur Safari Park has died. The giraffe died while undergoing treatment after falling ill in the park. Tarique Rahman, the officer-in-charge of the safari park, confirmed this information on Saturday afternoon.

He said, ‘The giraffe had been ill for a week. After learning about the matter, a special medical board was formed and treatment was being given. Tests showed that the giraffe was infected with tuberculosis (TB). The deceased giraffe was buried as per the rules.

The safari park authorities said that a general diary (GD) has been filed with the Sripur police station regarding the death of the giraffe. Gazipur Safari Park’s wildlife inspector Raju Ahmed filed the general diary on Friday afternoon. It said that the adult female African giraffe died at around 4 pm on October 23. Later, members of the medical board were present and completed the autopsy.

The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Md. Golam Haider, professor of the Pathobiology Department of Gazipur Agricultural University, and Zulkar Nain, veterinary officer of Gazipur Safari Park. Their report stated that the giraffe died of TB.

Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Abdul Barik told Jayzaydin, “A general diary has been filed regarding the death of the giraffe in the Safari Park. The matter of illness has been mentioned in it. We have sent the police for investigation.”

Note:- In 2013, there were about 12 giraffes, both domestic and foreign, in the park. Giraffes also started dying one after another due to negligence of duty and illness. Until 2017, the number of giraffes gradually decreased. With the death of the last remaining giraffe, the park became empty of giraffes.
