Dhaka Correspondent:
A tense situation has arisen around the July Charter signing ceremony in front of the Parliament Building. On Friday morning, the July fighters scaled the gates of the Parliament Building and took up position in front of the stage with three demands. At one stage, they sat on chairs arranged in front of the stage.
Their three demands are: 1. Amendment of the July Charter, 2. Permanent inclusion of the Charter in the constitution, and 3. Recognition of the July fighters in the July Charter.
Later, when the police removed them from the venue, a chase and counter-chase began between the July fighters and the police. The situation became heated in the Parliament Building area. At one stage, they took up positions on the road and set fire to a car, resulting in tension in the surrounding area.
At this time, National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz said from the stage, “The July Charter recognizes the July fighters. Therefore, I urge everyone to leave the event area peacefully.”
Incidentally, the chief advisor to the interim government, members of the National Consensus Commission, and representatives of 30 political parties are scheduled to sign the July Charter at today’s event. However, the National Citizens Party (NCP) and four left parties have already announced that they will not participate in the charter signing ceremony.
