Magura Correspondent:
Mirajul Islam, a staff reporter for the daily Amar Sangbad and President of the Magura District Journalists’ Forum, received a threatening phone call from an individual named Tarek—acting on behalf of Tapas, the owner of ‘Banarasi House’. Tarek demanded the removal of a published news report and threatened the journalist with death if the report was not deleted. Fearing for his own safety and that of his family, Islam filed a General Diary (GD) at the Magura Sadar Police Station on October 12 (GD No. 838).
The GD alleges threats made by several individuals, including Tarek, Rashed, and Russel. It also reports that unidentified persons were sent to his residence on two separate occasions.
It is worth noting that on October 8, a RAB raid in the Collegepara area of Magura resulted in the seizure of 28,000 Yaba pills, approximately 2 million Taka in cash, Phensedyl, and other items, along with the arrest of one individual. Tapas possesses substantial assets, including multiple houses in both Magura and Dhaka.
Concerned parties have called for an investigation into the incident and demanded that the safety of the journalist and his family be ensured.
