A housewife named Samia Akhter (27) has been accused of brutally torturing her husband Hafiz Mollah in Ramganj, Lakshmipur. She died at 2 am on Friday while undergoing treatment at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka. After her death, the accused husband Hafiz Mollah cleverly fled the scene leaving his wife’s body in the hospital morgue. The incident has created intense excitement and anger in the area.
The deceased Samia Akhter is the daughter of Delwar Hossain of Joynagar house in Bhadur union No. 3 of Ramganj upazila of Lakshmipur. The accused Hafiz Mollah is the son of Siraj Mollah of Maij house in Uttar village of the same union.
According to family sources, Hafiz Mollah took Samia out of her house and married her about 12 years ago. Since the marriage, Hafiz Mollah used to torture her inhumanly for any reason or no reason under the pretext of cheating. Locals said that apart from Samia, Hafiz has two other wives, Hafiz is a known drug dealer in the area and a violent person. There are several cases against him, including under the Narcotics and Arms Act.
The younger brother of the deceased, Hasan, said that on June 16, Hafiz Molla severely injured his sister Samia by beating her. When her condition became critical, he himself admitted Samia to Suhrawardy Hospital in Dhaka. Samia died there at 2 am on Friday after struggling with death for 9 days. As soon as the news of Samia’s death was confirmed, the killer Hafiz left the body in the hospital morgue to avoid arrest and fled.
Later, when the Suhrawardy Hospital authorities informed the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka, the police came and prepared a post-mortem report on the body and handed over the body to the family after the autopsy. Relatives claim that Samia had multiple injury marks on her body and was poisoned after being beaten.
When the body of the deceased Samia was brought to her father’s house in Bhadur Union on Friday night, a heartbreaking scene was created in the entire area. The locals and the relatives of the deceased erupted in anger demanding exemplary punishment for the murderer Hafiz.
The deceased’s father Delwar Hossain said, “Hafiz had been torturing Samia in various ways since their marriage. I filed a written complaint with Ramganj Police Station on June 25 regarding the torture. I want the hanging of the murderer Hafiz, who killed my daughter.
In this regard, Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Firoz Uddin Chowdhury said that a written complaint had already been filed with the police station on behalf of the victim’s family.
In addition, we received a letter from Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station in Dhaka on Friday, which mentioned that a woman had died of poisoning and that a postmortem had been conducted. We have sent a counter letter to Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station to send us the necessary documents including the autopsy report. Legal action will be taken immediately after investigation upon receipt of the documents.
