Pekua (Cox’s Bazar) Correspondent:
A woman living with two husbands in Pekua, Cox’s Bazar has created a stir in the area. The news that one woman is the wife of two men has created a quite sensational situation in the area. The incident took place in the hilly area called Chhonkhola, Ward No. 2 of Barbakia Union in Pekua Upazila.
Locals said that a woman named Josna Begum (22) from Chhonkhola area of East Pahariakhali of Barbakia Union is living with two husbands. The wife of the two men, Nurul Hossain and Nuruzzaman, is the same Josna Begum.
Locals said that on December 13, 2020, Josna Begum, daughter of Abdul Karim of Chhonkhola Miarjum area of Barbakia Union, and Nurul Hossain, son of neighbor Abu Taher of the same area, got married. The two were married with a registry certificate along with a dower of 4 lakh taka. Josna and Nurul Hossain have a 4-year-old son named Ariful Islam. Josna’s husband Nurul Hossain is a daily wage laborer by profession. He works as a laborer to install tube wells. Nurul Hossain is busy installing tube wells to support the family.
Meanwhile, housewife Josna Begum went missing for the past two and a half months. The woman ran away from home without her husband’s knowledge. Nurul Hossain was in a suffocating state after hearing the news that his wife had run away. He was running to different places to find his wife Josna. At that time, he came to know that his wife Josna Begum was living with a robber named Nuruzzaman from Bharuakhali in Barbakia Union. Nuruzzaman and Josna Begum were living illegally in a tent in a deep forest area of the mountains, pretending to be husband and wife. Upon receiving the news, local people including the forest department gathered there. Realizing the situation, Nuruzzaman and his loyal criminals quickly fled with Josna Begum. The forest department conducted a raid and demolished the tents built.
Nurul Hossain’s mother Rehana Begum said that Josna is a very bad-natured girl. She does not have a good character. Even though she is in my son’s family, she is having sex with another man as her husband. I have filed a written complaint with the police station. She is allegedly marrying Nuruzzaman the robber with a stamp. My son’s wife is a cabbie.
How can Josna marry another man without divorcing her first marriage? Is there no law in the country? Rehana Begum also said that now we are afraid because we live in the mountains. Josna Begum is threatening that if we go to the police station or court about this, she will take our domestic cattle and kill us and leave the area with her new husband, the robber Nuruzzaman.
To find out about the complaint, it was not possible to speak as the accused Josna Begum’s mobile phone was not connected despite several attempts to contact her.
Sardar Rahimdad, head of the Abadighona and Chhonkhola community management committee, said, “This girl is doing a great job. The boy’s parents came and told me about the matter. When the people here went to bring the girl from the mountains, Nuruzzaman had fled. Nuruzzaman is married. He has a wife, children and a daughter. I have advised the boy’s side to seek legal assistance.”
In this regard, Pekua Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mehedi Hasan said, “We have received a written complaint. Necessary legal action will be taken after investigation.”
