In Bagmara, Rajshahi, the police have arrested Nabab Hossain alias Bachchu (30), a leader of a weaving group, on charges of beating and regularly extorting money from a person named Narayan Bhabani (55), a Hindu community member. The Bagmara police station conducted a raid overnight and arrested him from Manda area of Naogaon early on Wednesday (September 17). The arrested weaving group leader is named Nabab Hossain alias Bachchu (30). He is the son of Munsur Rahman of Chainsara village in Gobindapara union of the upazila. He is the joint general secretary of the Gobindapara union branch of the nationalist weaving group.
He will be produced in court in the afternoon in the case of Narayan Bhabani, a victim of torture in Chainsara village. However, the central committee accepted Nabab Hossain and expelled him from the party when the party leader denied it. On Tuesday (September 16), Narayan Bhavani of Chainsara village was attacked and injured for not paying a donation of five thousand taka.
People admitted the injured person to the Upazila Health Complex. Members of the minority family of the village took a stand in the police station premises demanding the arrest of the weaving group leader. He left the police station after the police assured him of filing a case and arresting him. According to police and local sources, Nabab Hossain, the leader of the weaving group, demanded a donation of five thousand taka from a person named Narayan Bhavani (Narayan Chandra), a resident of Chainsara village of Gobindapara union, a week ago.
He said that if he wants to stay in that village, he will have to pay the money. He said that there will be problems if he does not pay. However, he refused to pay the money. Meanwhile, on Tuesday (September 16), Narayan Bhavani was returning home from a rice mill in the village at around 12 noon. On the way, the leader of the weaving gang, Nawab Hossain, stopped him. He demanded an explanation as to why he was not given five thousand taka. At one point, he (Nawab) got angry and beat him up and left him injured. Later, people rescued him and took him to the local health complex.
When the incident came to light, more than a hundred men and women from the village's Hindu community protested at the Bagmara police station, 20 kilometers away. They demanded a proper investigation into the incident, the arrest of the weaving gang leader and their safety. When the police accepted the case, assured them of arrest and security, they left the police station at 2:30 pm. At night, Narayan Bhavani filed a case as a plaintiff. Later, he was arrested. The people of the Hindu community of Chainsara village expressed satisfaction with the news of the arrest.
However, Nawab demanded that he not be released quickly. Talking to the villagers, it was learned that Nawab Hossain alias Bachchu became reckless after August 5 last year. His house is in the middle of Chainsara village. Around 100 families of the Hindu community live in the vicinity. He has influence in the Hindu neighborhood. Nipendranath Mandal of that village said that a few days ago, fish were killed from his pond. Jugendranath said that paddy was taken from his house by threatening him. He used to roam around the Hindu neighborhood with two sharp weapons in both hands and create fear. However, the amount of extortion he takes is small. He demands a maximum of 20 thousand taka. However, he can be saved by paying five to seven thousand taka.
Jogendranath Das of Chainsara village said that two months ago, 10-12 boys came to his house, formed a mob and took 10 thousand taka. People of the Hindu neighborhood have made more than a hundred such complaints. Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council Bagmara Upazila branch president Bishwanath Pramanik said, they condemned the incident.
We are happy to arrest him quickly. We have talked to local BNP leaders, they said they will look into the security issue. Locals said that Nabab Hossain used to participate in various programs of BNP and its affiliates. He participated in the workers' meeting of the Tanti Dal organized at Maria College ground in Gobindapara Union on July 31. Upazila BNP convener DM Ziaur Rahman was the chief guest at that meeting.
Nabab Hossain was seen sitting in front of the stage. He was introduced as the joint general secretary of the Gobindapara Union of the Tanti Dal. Habibur Rahman, chairman of that union council and member of the convening committee of the BNP upazila branch, said, earlier, people had caught him (Nawab) with sharp weapons and handed him over to the army members. There are many such allegations against him.
In this regard, Mamunur Rashid Mamun, the convener of the Bagmara Upazila branch of the Tanti Dal, said in a status on Facebook, Nabab Hossain is not a member of the party, the name was proposed in the workers' meeting. The committee has not been approved.
However, the central committee of the Tanti Dal has temporarily suspended Nabab Hossain alias Bachchu in a notification. The decision to expel was announced in a letter signed by the party's central committee convener Abul Kalam and member secretary Haji Mujibur Rahman. It was also requested to hand him over to the police as soon as he was seen. At the same time, an investigation committee has been formed and initiatives have been taken to permanently expel him.
Bagmara Police Station OC Touhidul Islam said that Nabab Hossain hid himself after the incident. Several police teams tried to arrest him. Nabab Hossain kept changing his location frequently. Later, with the help of information and technology, he was arrested in the early morning from the Kalinagar area of Manda area of Naogaon. He is facing charges of extortion and rioting.
