A memorial service was held at Jessore Town Hall Maidan on Thursday to mark the seventh death anniversary of former BNP minister and national standing committee member Tariqul Islam. Speaking as the chief guest, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that Tariqul Islam was a moral, idealistic and lifelong politician. He never compromised on democracy, human rights and the interests of the people.
The memorial service was presided over by District BNP President Advocate Syed Saberul Haque Sabu and moderated by General Secretary Delwar Hossain Khokon.
In his speech, Mirza Fakhrul said, "Tariqul Islam was a man of the field. He came to politics not in power politics, but by earning the trust of the people. Even in difficult times of oppression, he did not deviate from his ideals. He was active in every movement to restore democracy in Bangladesh." He also said, "In today's crisis, the country needed leadership like him."
Regarding the national situation, the BNP Secretary General said, “November 7 is an important day in the history of Bangladesh. On that day, the patriotic people and members of the armed forces saved the nation from a major crisis. Even today, the country's democracy is in the same crisis. The responsibility of the interim government is to ensure an acceptable election. The outcome of any evasion or biased behavior in the election will not be auspicious.”
He said, “BNP is continuing a peaceful political struggle to restore democracy. This struggle will not stop until the people's voting rights are ensured.” At this time, he introduced the candidates nominated by the party for five seats in Jessore district and sought support for the paddy sheaf.

Engineer TS Ayub said at the event that Tariqul Islam was a disciplined, polite and humane political figure. He always encouraged party workers to do honest politics. Mofiqul Hasan Tripti said that his ministerial term was an example of transparency. He never put personal interests above political responsibilities.
Kazi Rawnakul Islam Shraban said that under the leadership of Tariqul Islam, Jessore BNP gained a strong foundation. He inspired the youth to participate in politics. Sabira Sultana Munni said that he always showed respect and cooperation towards women's leadership. Amlendu Das Apu said that he maintained politeness even with his opponents - which is rare in current politics.
President of the Journalists Union Jessore, Akramuzzaman said that Tariqul Islam's position on the issue of freedom of the press was clear and firm. He always encouraged journalists to reveal the truth. Among others who spoke were Jahanara Siddique, Jahangir Biswas, Ali Ahmed, Monowar Hossain, Hasan Zahir, Tania Rahman, Zahurul Islam, Maulana Abdul Mannan, etc.
The speakers said that Jessore has lost a strong political leadership with the death of Tariqul Islam. His honesty, values and wisdom are important lessons for the young generation.
BNP Vice President Professor Nargis Begum, Khulna Divisional Organizing Secretary Anindya Islam Amit and district and upazila level leaders and activists were present at the event. After the memorial service, prayers were offered for the departed soul.
