Professor of Geography and Environment Department of Jahangirnagar University. Md. Nazrul Islam received the international research award ‘Nagao Wetland Fund 2025’, University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan congratulated and wished.
Professor Dr. Monday (10 November). Nazrul Islam’s project titled ‘Modeling Community-led Conservation Strategy Integrating Science-Policy Nexus for Reducing the Degradation of Tanguar Haor Wetland in Bangladesh’ has been selected for funding by the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands in Switzerland.
In his congratulatory message, Vice-Chancellor Professor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan said, “Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam’s achievement of this international award is a glorious achievement for Jahangirnagar University. His success will further accelerate the quality of our university’s research and scientific excellence. I believe, his fundamental research will enrich Bangladesh’s climate and environmental research on a global scale.”
In this regard, Professor Dr. Nazrul Islam said, “The focus of my research is to develop a strategy to address biodiversity loss in the Haor region of Bangladesh, particularly the Tanguar Haor wetlands, due to the multiple impacts of climate change and human use. This research will develop a ‘community-led conservation strategy model’ for Tanguar Haor, a Ramsar Convention site.”
The aim of this study is to raise awareness of the importance of the haor and the causes of its degradation among the fishermen, farmers and tourism stakeholders who depend on the haor and to encourage them to take the lead in conservation. The project will collect scientific data analyzing the hydrological and ecological impact of the Haor and share it with the community. At the policy-making stage, working to prevent future degradation of the Ramsar site using input from government and the private sector.”
Note, Professor Nazrul Islam’s research is an innovative attempt to scientifically model the sustainable conservation and participatory initiatives of the Tanguar Haor in Bangladesh.
