Fed up with muggings, the general public is taking the law into their own hands

Dhaka Correspondent:

Incidents of robberies are happening every day in different areas of Dhaka. Morning and afternoon, from busy roads to alleys—no place is safe now. From working people to students and ordinary pedestrians—almost everyone has been a victim of robberies in one way or another.

Locals said that despite the presence of police patrols or law enforcement, criminals are robbing and fleeing in a matter of moments using various tactics. Fed up with this situation, ordinary people are taking up resistance on their own. In some places, robbers are being beaten up by mobs, while some are carrying sharp weapons or sticks for self-defense.

The victims said that they have to risk their lives every day to move around. On the way home at night, mobile phones, money, and even motorcycles are being robbed. Many say that despite repeated complaints, the desired security is not being provided. As a result, helpless people are being forced to take the law into their own hands.

Law enforcement sources say that organized robbery gangs are active in several areas of the capital. Police claim that despite regular raids, this problem cannot be solved without the cooperation of the public.

However, social analysts say that people taking the law into their own hands is a dangerous trend. While this is a warning to the robbers on the one hand, it is also destroying people’s trust in the rule of law. According to them, if effective steps are not taken quickly, insecurity in the city will increase further.
