Panchbibi (Joypurhat) Correspondent:
In Panchbibi, Joypurhat, the rains for several days have caused extensive damage to early potato cultivation throughout the upazila. Due to unseasonal rains over the past few days, potato cultivation lands have been submerged in water. This has caused extensive damage to farmers. Farmers are distraught in such natural disasters.
It can be seen in various areas of the upazila that farmers cultivate potatoes in advance in the hope of making some profit, but now they are facing a lot of damage as their potato lands have been submerged in rainwater. Among the 8 unions in the upazila, the farmers of Kusumba Union have suffered the most. One of the many farmers in this union, Golam Maula, said that he cultivated potatoes in advance to compensate for the loss caused by the collapse of potato cultivation last year, but he also suffered damage here due to the rainwater. The farmer also said that this time he did not get a fair price for his potatoes even after storing them in cold stores.
Now, take the potato seeds out of the water, take them home, dry them in the air of a fan, and if the weather is good, these seeds can be planted later. But this will increase our labor costs, but there is no other way.
Panchbibi Upazila Agriculture Officer and Agriculturist Jasim Uddin said that if arrangements are made to drain rainwater from the potato fields that have accumulated quickly, the amount of damage will be reduced.
