Bangladesh Textile University (BUTEX) has announced closure of all classes and examinations for 11 days and ordered complete closure of residential halls due to the risk of recent earthquakes and aftershocks.
Today (November 23) in the evening, the registrar professor. This information was informed in a notification signed by Rasheda Begum Dina. According to the notification, the academic activities of the university will be closed from November 24 to December 4 and the next examinations will be held from December 7 as per the previously announced routine. Also, the residential halls of the students will be completely closed during the holidays and the residential students will have to vacate the halls by 11 am on November 24.
Besides, the winter vacation of the university has been decided from November 30 to December 4. After the holiday, all departments, offices, classes and academic activities of the university will continue as usual from December 7.
Today (November 23) morning, engineers from the Department of Education and Engineering visited the buildings and halls of the campus on an urgent basis. A preliminary inspection indicated that the buildings and halls needed renovation and ordered urgent repairs of rooms 401 and 403 of Shaheed Aziz Hall as unfit for habitation.
Shaheed Aziz Hall Provost Prof. Dr. Md. Ahsan Habib said that due to successive earthquakes, some cracks or infrastructural weaknesses have appeared in various halls including Shaheed Aziz Hall. That's why we went to the Provost Team Shaheed Aziz Hall and inspected the whole situation on the ground. We looked at the rooms, talked to the students and assessed the initial situation. One should deal with any situation calmly, patiently without panicking and follow the instructions of the administration. Student safety is our highest priority.
Student of Syed Nazrul Islam Hall. Taufiqul Islam said, since the recent earthquake, a kind of discomfort and fear has been created in the minds of the students of our hall. Words cannot express how helpless we all are during an earthquake. Meanwhile, our hall is such that if a small car passes through the road, the whole building shakes. Every time that vibration, the question arises in the mind - is it a car vibration, or another earthquake?
It is to be noted that in the earthquake of the last two days, there was a crack in the wall in the extension part of Captain Sitara Begum Hall from the 1st to the 4th floor, cracks in the beam and pillar of the ceiling of Shaheed Aziz Hall and plaster falling off in Osmani Hall. In this situation, the residential students went to the residence of the vice-chancellor of the university and demanded the temporary suspension of academic activities including examinations. After the vice-chancellor assured them, they returned to the hall.
