Police have arrested a couple who were allegedly involved in the murder of a newborn girl who was found dead at the hospital after she was raped in Kaliganj, Gazipur.

Police and local sources said that on Friday (October 3), around 2:30 pm, the body of a newborn girl was found in a garbage bin in the women's washroom of the Bismillah Diagnostic Center and Trauma General Hospital in Kaliganj. The body had a white toilet tissue stuffed in its mouth and its umbilical cord was severed about two inches above. Unable to confirm the identity of the body, hospital director Md. Shahid Munshi filed a written complaint with Kaliganj Police Station.

Police reached the spot and prepared a post-mortem report of the deceased newborn. Later, after watching the CCTV footage of the hospital, the police identified and questioned Aparajita (15), the teenage daughter of Abdul Latif of Dakshin Bhadartti village in Kaliganj Municipality. During interrogation, Aparajita said that she was in a love relationship with Tuhin Islam (16), the son of Nazrul Islam, from the same village, and that she became pregnant after they had physical relations. On Friday afternoon, she went to the local Bismillah Diagnostic Center and Trauma General Hospital for treatment. When she went there, she started having labor pains and gave birth to a baby girl in the women's washroom.

But when the newborn did not cry, she cut the umbilical cord herself, stuffed tissue paper in her mouth, threw it in a garbage bin, and went home. Later, when the police arrested Tuhin and interrogated him, he confessed to raping her. Hospital director Shahid Munshi filed a case number 5(10)25 against Aparajita on Saturday (October 4) for the murder of the newborn. Later, her mother, Ms. Jasmine Akhter, filed another case number 7(10)25 against Tuhin on Sunday (October 5) for raping Aparajita.

In this regard, Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Alauddin said, we started the investigation after receiving the news of finding the body of a newborn in a hospital garbage bin. At one point, after identifying one person through CCTV footage, when questioned, she confessed that she became pregnant as a result of rape, gave birth to the baby while seeking treatment, and left home without seeking treatment after she did not cry. Later, the rapist Tuhin was also arrested. Two separate cases have been filed in this incident. The arrested were sent to Gazipur court on Sunday afternoon.
