A firestorm has erupted in Gangni, Meherpur over the seizure of MOP fertilizer worth around 1.5 crore taka. Finally, due to the strong action of the locals, the Gangni Upazila administration, army and police initially seized 3,360 bags of fertilizer and placed them in the custody of Gangni Municipality BNP General Secretary Shahidul Islam.
Gangni Upazila Executive Officer Anwar Hossain, Upazila Agriculture Officer Imran Hossain, Gangni Police Station Sub-Inspector SI Abdul Gaffar were present at the time.
Locals said that on Sunday night, some fertilizer trucks carrying 3,360 bags of fertilizer were unloaded at the godown of “AR Enterprise” proprietor Gangni Municipality BNP General Secretary Shahidul Islam and managed by Bappi and Abdul Halim in Gangni Bashundharapara area of Meherpur-Kushtia regional road. Mysteriously, some people started loading the fertilizer truck again from the same godown on Sunday, October 11, 2025 evening. When this raised suspicion among the locals, they informed the Upazila Administration and Agriculture Department, including the police, and members of the law enforcement forces. At one stage, the Meherpur Deputy Commissioner was also informed. Later, Upazila Executive Officer Anwar Hossain and Agriculture Officer Imran Hossain reached the spot. At one point, a smokestack was created over the fertilizers, then some workers from the labor union, including the general secretary of Gangni Municipality BNP, Shahidul Islam, came and said that a tobacco company had brought the MOP fertilizers for Jhenaidah district, and they had been kept in this godown due to problems there.
The fertilizers were purchased from a tobacco company in Chittagong by a tobacco company, but no one from the tobacco company came near the fertilizers.
Bappi, a director of “AR Enterprise”, said that this is our rod cement shop, Sramik League leader Moniruzzaman called and said that the fertilizers would be unloaded later and the company’s people would come and take them, they would pay the rent, my house was empty, I unloaded the fertilizers at my house, today they are taking them, but the drivers said that if the fertilizers were loaded, the truck’s wheels would be damaged, that’s why we have unloaded the fertilizers here, we even went to file a GD in this regard at the police station, but since the police station chief was not there, the GD was not filed.
Workers’ union leader and transport agent Aktaruzzaman said, this cargo was supposed to be unloaded at Jibangar in Chuadanga, but for some reason the fertilizer was not unloaded there, they called us and said to unload the cargo at Gangni, we still do not know why the cargo was unloaded here.
In this regard, Gangni Upazila Agriculture Officer Imran Hossain said, this fertilizer was brought here by a British American company, after informing us, the Gangni Police Station OC came to the spot and seized the fertilizer for now and took their consignment documents, I have asked the real owners of the fertilizer to come tomorrow. Action will be taken after taking the necessary documents from them.
Gangni Upazila Nirbahi Officer Anwar Hosne said, currently there is a crisis regarding fertilizer, the agriculture officer has spoken to those who bought the fertilizer, they will actually resolve the matter through appropriate representatives.
