Roni Akand, Special Correspondent, Joypurhat:
A newborn baby has died during childbirth at a private clinic in Joypurhat city. The District Civil Surgeon's Office has formed a three-member committee to investigate the incident. The committee has been directed to submit an investigation report within the next five working days.
The committee was formed on Sunday (August 9) afternoon. Earlier, on Saturday (August 8), Mostafizur Rahman Kajal, a resident of Kariya village in Panchbibi Upazila and the child's father, submitted a written complaint to the District Civil Surgeon in this regard. The matter was confirmed by Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Al Mamun.
The investigation committee has been headed by Dr. Sardar Rashed Mobarak, superintendent of the 400-bed Joypurhat General Hospital. The other two members of the committee are - Dr. Nasima Akhter Nina, senior consultant (gynecology) of the same hospital and Dr. Assistant Professor (Insitu, Gynecology) of Khetlal Upazila Health Complex. Morsheda Khatun Swapna.
The complaint states that on the advice of gynecologist Noor-un Nahar Nazmi, Kajal's wife, Ms. Rahima Khatun, was admitted to the Jaipur Clinic for delivery at around 11 am on August 3. After the necessary tests, she was taken to the operation theater (OT) at around 7:30 pm that day.
The complaint further states that since his wife was in labor pain for a long time, the doctor was repeatedly requested to perform a cesarean section. But instead of doing so, the doctors and nurses tried to perform a normal delivery. On the day of the incident, attempts were made to perform a normal delivery from 7:30 pm to 8 pm.
At one stage, four or five people, including the doctor and nurse, tried to pull out the baby by holding his wife's hands and feet. This caused injuries to various parts of the baby's body. Later, Kajal alleged that the baby was born but died in critical condition after some time.
Mostafizur Rahman said, "My newborn child died due to the negligence of the doctor. I have given a written complaint to the civil surgeon in this incident. I demand exemplary action against the culprits.
When I went to the Joypur Clinic on Sunday afternoon to inquire about the complaint, I could not find the manager Jahangir Alam in his office. Later, I called his mobile phone, but he did not respond.
Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Al Mamun said, I have received a written complaint. A three-member investigation committee has been formed in this incident. Necessary action will be taken after receiving the investigation report.
