Healy (Dinajpur) Representative:
In the wholesale market of Dinajpur’s Hili land port, domestic onion prices have increased by Tk 10 to Tk 12 per kg. Currently domestic onion is being sold in the market at Tk 40 to Tk 45 per kg, which was Tk 30 to Tk 35 a week ago.
Common buyers are in trouble due to this sudden increase in prices. They demanded to control the price of daily necessities through regular supervision and effective monitoring in the market.
Traders said that onion crops were damaged due to continuous rains and floods in different areas. As a result, the supply of onion to the Mokams has decreased significantly due to the decrease in production. This has affected the wholesale market, due to which prices have increased.
Atwar Gani Osman, an onion trader at Hili wholesale market, said, “Floods and heavy rains have caused extensive damage to the fields in the onion producing areas. This has reduced the import of onions in places. Due to low supply, the prices have increased. But we expect the prices to return to normal if the imports increase in the market.”
Several buyers who came to buy onions in the market said that the price of a kg has increased by 10 to 12 taka in a few days and the family’s expenses have increased. They demanded that necessary steps be taken to control prices by strengthening market monitoring.
On the other hand, onion sellers also say that supply shortage is the main reason for the current price hike. They expect that the prices will come down when onions start coming to the market at normal rates from the producing areas.
