OC of Chunarughat Police Station in Habiganj district closed

Chunarughat (Habiganj) Correspondent:

A sensational incident recently took place in Chunarughat Upazila of Habiganj district, which has raised questions about the rule of law and the impartiality of the police. It has been alleged that the driver, suspecting that 4 lakh taka was stolen from the OC’s house, ransacked his own driver Wasim’s house to recover it.

Although he was closed after the video went viral and the news was published, the question of where the OC’s house got 4 lakh taka at once is now in the public’s mind! And everyone is waiting to know.

A few days ago – after arresting two Chhatra League leaders at Chunarughat Police Station, OC Nur Alam released one of the accused who was in the police station’s custody in exchange for 2 lakh taka. Surprisingly, the other accused was sent to jail through the court for not being able to pay the money but there was no case against him. However, the former joint convener of the upazila Chhatra League of the banned organization “Chhatra League” Ful Mia Khandaker Maya.

According to local sources, the police station arrested two Chhatra League leaders from Chunarughat on March 23 in a raid. The two leaders are former joint convener of the Upazila Chhatra League, Phul Mia Khandaker Maya, and another, Wahidul Islam, general secretary of Chunarughat Ahmedabad Union Chhatra League, and according to various newspapers, a drug dealer by profession.

But after the arrest, Wahidul Islam was dramatically released from the police station and Maya was sent to jail. It is alleged that the OC of the police station publicly released a real accused after accepting a large bribe.

Local people say that such financial transactions and irresponsibility within the police station are not only disrupting the rule of law, but are also destroying the trust of the general public in the police. This is not just an administrative error, but a well-planned criminal activity. This should have been investigated and the perpetrators should have been punished.

Such incidents in Chunarughat have questioned the impartiality and transparency of the administration. The people wanted a proper investigation into this incident and exemplary punishment to be provided to the culprits so that such irregularities do not happen again in the future.

Kamruzzaman Masum, the eldest son of Abu Saleh Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman, former chairman of Ranigaon Union No. 9 of Chunarughat Upazila, said that on July 23, 2015, he had filed a complaint against Ashi Nurul Alam to the Chief of Police IGP Mahodar, which is presented below.

The following individuals are the ones who each received bribes worth around 70 lakh taka from the accused in the anti-discrimination agitation case: Former Upazila Chairman and District Awami League Advisor Alhaj Abdul Qadir Laskar, 20 lakh taka from Ahmedabad Union No. 2 Chairman Zakir Hossain Palash, 5 lakh taka from Deorgach Union No. 3 Chairman Muhitur Rahman Rumon, 5 lakh taka from Santiajuri Union No. 8 Chairman Abdal Mia, 5 lakh taka from Former Upazila Chairman and District Awami League Advisor Alhaj Abdul Qadir Laskar, 20 lakh taka from Ranigaon Union No. 9 Chairman Mostafizur Rahman Ripon, 5 lakh taka from Mirashi Union No. 10 Chairman Manik Sarkar, 5 lakh taka from Jubo League General Secretary Selim Mia Urpe 20 lakhs from Balu Selim and 5 lakhs from Sajal Das, Joint General Secretary of Upazila Jubo League, for a total of 70 lakhs.

After his release and investigation, it was learned that Nurul Amin, General Secretary of Ranigaon Union BNP No. 9 and his younger brother Nazrul and Sala Uddin Babru, President of Ahmedabad Union BNP No. 2, were receiving bribes from drug and smuggling dealers through numerous brokers.

It is worth noting that in 2021, when OC Nur Alam was in Sunamganj Shalla Police Station, a female colleague was offered several lakhs of taka per month from drugs and gambling, and there was no police clearance or FIR except for the bribe money. Therefore, OC Md. Nur Alam was closed from there by order No. 387/2021 dated (12 August 2021).
