A heinous gang rape incident has taken place in Savar again. A 24-year-old woman was taken to a banana plantation and raped by four youths. The incident took place in Jhauchar area of Tetuljhora Union of Savar on Thursday (September 11) afternoon. The victim was rescued and admitted to the One Stop Crisis Center (OCC) of Dhaka Medical College Hospital at night.
According to police and local sources, the woman went to a factory in Shyampur area on Thursday afternoon in search of a job. When she reached Jhauchar area while returning home after talking about work, four youths suddenly forcibly dragged her to a nearby banana plantation. There, Sharif Hossain, Abul Kashem of Dakshin Meita area, Russell of Jhauchar Uttarpara and Sohag Mia of Dakshin Meita took turns raping her.
When the woman screamed loudly during the rape, the people around her came forward. Sensing their presence, the accused quickly left. Later, the victim was rescued with the help of locals.
At night, the victim went to Savar Model Police Station and filed a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, mentioning the names of the four people. The police launched a drive immediately after receiving the complaint.
Savar Model Police Station OC Jewel Mia said that three people involved in the incident – Sharif Hossain, Abul Kashem and Russell – have been arrested. A drive is underway to catch the absconding accused Sohag Mia.
Later, the police quickly admitted the victim to the One Stop Crisis Center of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment. Doctors said that the victim is currently undergoing treatment and is being kept under close observation.
There is widespread tension in the area after the incident. Locals have demanded that the remaining accused be arrested as soon as possible and given exemplary punishment. They alleged that anti-social activities were already taking place in Jhauchar and the surrounding areas, but such a horrific incident occurred due to the lack of proper surveillance.
